Mosquitoes and You: How to Avoid Mosquito Bites

Now that the temperatures have heated up, it means that summer is here and mosquitoes have returned. It is important to take personal protection measures against mosquitoes because not only do their bites can cause an itchy reaction, but they can also transmit potentially harmful diseases. Female mosquitoes are very choosy for their potential blood meals. They are attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale, body temperature, how active or non-active you are and the combinations of smells you have put on or are releasing. In fact, certain female mosquitoes can detect their targets as much as 50 meters away that are upwind! Here are some ways to protect yourself and your loved ones from this nuisance and vector mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes see dark and grey objects more easily, so opt to wear long, loose fitting, light colored clothing whenever possible.

You should apply mosquito repellent when outdoors, especially if you are out for long periods of time. If using a spray, apply mosquito repellent to any exposed areas of your skin. We recommend choosing a repellent that contains DEET but there are other registered products available with alternative active ingredients. ALWAYS read and follow the label directions for using repellents. Do not use a repellent without reading the label especially when children and babies are to be protected.

Eliminating or if not possible, treating standing water with Bti is a good way to prevent mosquitoes from developing on your property. Killing the larvae in the water stage is far easier than trying to kill a flying female adult mosquito. Areas that could potential problem zones are low spots that can hold water for approximately 7 days, children’s pools, gutters, watering cans or barrels, bird baths, eaves, wheel barrels, or any object that can hold water. Even a leaky outdoor faucet may cause a puddle to form and create larval habitat for mosquitoes to develop in.
