Cockroach extermination: Alternative pest control methods

Cockroach infestations are often effectively treated with pest control methods and chemicals that require people, pets, and other animals to vacate a location for a period of time and can involve extensive preparation before treatment. In situations where people and pets or sensitive equipment cannot be easily moved, there are some alternative methods to spraying.

Alternative pest control tools

Many pest control tools and natural remedies can be effective against cockroaches. Here are some examples:

  • A vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter and a crevice tool can be one of the best ways to quickly contain a large number of cockroaches. Avoid using a vacuum with a regular filter because airborne cockroach parts can cause allergic reactions.
  • Diatomaceous earth (DE) isa natural material that dehydrates and kills cockroaches after contact. Domestic-grade insecticides containing diatomaceous earth should always be used according to label directions and can be lightly dusted into places where cockroaches usually hide.
  • Pyrethrin Powder is a pesticide derived from chrysanthemum flowers. Like Diatomaceous earth, pyrethrin powder should be used according to label directions and can also be lightly dusted into cockroach hiding places.
  • DIY traps are another way to fight cockroaches. A clean glass jar with the inner top part lined with petroleum jelly and mineral oil (or another material that will prevent them from crawling out) and containing bait can help collect cockroaches. Cockroaches are often attracted to baits such as bread-and-beer, dog food, apple and blueberry oils, peanut butter, and many other things.
  • Glue traps are easier and faster to set up compared to DIY traps. Place them in and around warm, dark areas with small hiding spaces, close to water sources, and where cockroaches like to spend time. Use glue traps to help monitor cockroach activity and to trap them and other small pests.
  • Homemade baits can vary in safety, attractiveness, and effectiveness. Baits need to be kept out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidental poisoning. Many homemade baits contain a sugar or food attractant and borax, which is toxic to cockroaches if they eat it. It is important to consider that many cockroaches are less likely to eat baits containing glucose than they were in the past.
  • Freezing temperatures will kill pest species of cockroaches if they are exposed long enough. Buildings should not be allowed to freeze, but some types of infested items can be placed in freezing conditions outdoors or in freezers from a full day to a week. The larger the item or the more insulated, the longer it will take. Be careful, some things may become brittle, crack, or be ruined by condensation after cold exposure.

Prevention is key

The most eco-friendly and pesticide-free approach to fighting cockroaches is prevention. Follow these tips to keep cockroaches out:

  • Carefully inspect all incoming items and deliveries for signs of cockroaches. Do not bring infested items inside, if possible. Contain infested items quickly.
  • Maintain a clean and clutter-free environment to deny cockroaches access to easy food sources and hiding places.
  • Keep garbage and other waste in sealed containers and remove it regularly to eliminate potential food sources for cockroaches.
  • Remove access to the water cockroaches need to survive. Repair plumbing and ventilation, cover or screen drains, cover gaps leading into appliances, and cover or remove other sources of moisture.
  • Seal cracks and crevices to prevent cockroaches from easily moving between adjacent rooms and units.
  • Treat infestations as soon as possible.
